Tonawanda Rally

6 12 2008

The wind was blowing off the mighty Niagara River a few miles up river from the Falls this area is so known for. But today was not just an ordinary blistery day for Western New York. You could just see it in the eyes of the men and women that had bundled up for a rally that these people so hoped would help save there jobs. This wasn’t about an another labor dispute this was a cause bigger than just one company, a problem so big that it made several unions join hands along with white collar employees, politicians, heads of car dealerships, and too many others to name. Yes we all braved the harsh climate for an hour to show how much we care about our jobs that are in jeopardy. But even with the sub freezing temperatures and the bitter arctic wind you could not estingish the fiery passion in everyone’s hearts this day.
Today was a day that I will not forget in my lifetime. Because all of my working family is getting attacked from everyone weather its the hypocritical politicians or the biased media that sensationalizes our every word. today the auto industry makes a stand and I am proud to be part of that fight. Remember its Wall Street that got us in this mess along with blind goverment

Getting Penalized for Being A Father

20 11 2008

Well I wanted to write this post to show how much of country club working for GM can be. Continuously I keep reading how our work rules are so lenient and out of touch to the normal work place , maybe this story will give you a reality check. What you have to remember is General Motors has used the media to wage a war against UAW since the strike in Flint, Michigan.
With the last contract many things changed when it comes to work rules. The biggest one being the attendance program. To give you a little background we are given five sick days which can be used without repercussions. Then depending on how much time you have with the company you have vacation days which have to be prearranged. Now the thing you have watch is that the advisers don’t use your sick time when you have prearranged vacation time. Since once you burn through your sick time everything is at there disgression. Now before we go further this is the penalty line up

1 offense- written disciplinary action
2 offense-3 days off without pay
3 offense-5 days off without pay
4 offense-30 days off without pay
5 offense-termination

Now to give you the story. Being almost the end of the year I have used most of my time off 95% of that being used for family reasons. So Tuesday Kelly came down with a nasty virus and was down hard for the whole day. To make things worse Madison has been running fevers and is very sick at the same time. And, if that was not enough Kelsi had an important ceremony with girl scouts. I knew after seeing the condition she was in that there was no way that she could handle the kids that night. So I did what any other father in my position would do is call in to work and say I needed a day off. So I took the night off and helped out with dinner and taking care of the both girls.
Well when I return to work Wednesday I was informed that I was being put on noticed pending a disciplinary interview. Since I was out of sick time and did not have the authorization to use one of my vacation days I was getting disciplined. You know there are times when you know you have done something wrong such as blowing the day off so you could go fishing or go to the bar for a few drinks. But this was not one of them, I explained my situation and my adviser seem sympathetic to my circumstances but this is the way they had decided to go. Don’t get me wrong I could care less and they could kiss my white hairy ass if they don’t like the idea that my family comes first. You know its just one of those things I guess when the old line Life Isn’t Fair pertains.
So my challenge tonight is to go through this interview tonight and not laugh at them. Because I truly don’t care if they penalized me because in my heart and to my God I was a good father/ husband. As far as I’m concerned if you can say that what else truly matters

Detroit News In Constant Refresh

18 11 2008

Its a very scary time right now to be a domestic autoworker. I had a talk with Kelly today about the challenges that are going to affect us. You know Iv’e always believed in what I have done. Iv’e worked very hard at the sacrifice of my duties as a father. The basketball games Iv’e missed not to mention the family dinners. It just really burns my but to hear people act like they know the road I walk on a daily basis. The brother ship I feel with my working family most people cannot even ascertain. When you read all these stereotypes for industry just remember that maybe things are a little different under the hood.

What is even more upsetting for me is when I make a resume how sparse the page looks. What is sad under that few words under employment for General Motors there is a working man that has busted hiss ass for the last fifteen years. Just really hope pepole take that into concideration

Pretty Good Synopsis of the industry

Time to throw my hat in the ring

17 11 2008

Well once again here we are at the same old position. The auto industry problems land square on the shoulders the UAW and its contracts right. My position Fuck You! I will never apologize for making a living wage and at the same time being open to concessions as they have been introduced. What angers me the most is that the individuals that do the most talking have no clue what they are talking about

Myth number one: Autoworkers enjoy free health insurance WRONG

For the past five years our health insurance has been in a constant state of flux. I started off with a great HMO with little in the way of cost. That was great benefit especially with children. But that was yanked last contract. We have a Traditional Blue Cross plan which gives our family three office visits at twenty dollar copay’s and then all office visits and testing are pocket payed. I have always argued that I would like to keep the HMO and pay the added costs. I understand health care is not free but the bigger problems are the medical industry needs to be regulated because there incapable to regulate themselves.

Workrule Flexibility

Don’t even get me going on all the concessions we have made at the factories. Sure you get some douche bag on the news spouting off about this or that trust me for the majority of the members its not easy work. Not to mention we have been very flexible and open to changes locally and internationally. I have watched how jobs have been combined, jobs have been eliminated by automation, and good old you are just going to have to do more work. Believe me when I say the auto industry of ten years ago is not the same industry it is today.

My hope is that you read the article and take the time to do some honest research not mindless assumptions. Our pay is good yes but only accounts for 10% of the price of a new car. Trust us we want to build the more fuel efficient cars out there because we are paying the high gasoline prices too. But look in your driveway at what you where buying a few years ago. We couldn’t make enough suv’s a industry cant turn on a dime and we are beholden to the execs that make the decisions in Detroit.
The problem the industry faces now is because of greed and lack of ethics in wall street and the Banking system. Under the Bush administration this country has been destroyed. The greed in the housing market is sickening and I have seen people within my personal circle get screwed over in that greed. Come on people did you really think housing values where just going to continue to rise every year 30-40% it was a bubble. If you have any of my previous posts I saw this coming. The middle class has been decimated and there is no job growth. Yeah I’ll get some asshole talking about how wal-mart is creating jobs. Please lets get serious we need more decent paying jobs. If we don’t stop this economic explosion from getting bigger it will take out every industry in the United States that includes governments. It will start on a local level but it will curtail out of control.

Lets wake up people I love this country and can truly say I’m proud to be an American. But lets get back to basics and stop shooting ourselves in the foot.

12 09 2008 save me 400.00

21 07 2008

Well to set the scene we where in Chincatuege Virginia at a family campground and Kelsi wanted to ride sitting on the tailgate of our truck. I thought what the heck there would be no harm since you cant drive high speeds through the campground. So I proceeded to push the button in the blazer to open the rear hatch when I heard the dreadful noise of failure that I knew well from a few years ago when the latch had previous broken twice under warranty. Well I decided to just enjoy the rest of my vacation and deal with this later. Unfortunately I knew this would make packing the truck up for Buffalo a monumental challenge.

Well I got back to Buffalo and after constant reminder from my wife and a very difficult canoe trip having to load our truck from the side door I decide to get it fixed. Me being handy and working in the automotive field I felt a bit inclined to do some investigation into this problem. And here is when the problem starts.

So I decided to do a little research into just into how to exactly begin tear apart the tail gate of my truck. I wasn’t really sure how to separate the back window and tailgate. So I decided to do a search on Google to see what I could find in ther message boards and forums . Thankfully I found a forum by the name of I can’t even begin to tell you how happy I was to know how easily I would be able to fix this problem. Turns out that most of the time a plastic linkage breaks and just needs replaced. So you would assume that all that was left to do is go to the dealership and buy the plastic piece. Wrong!!! The dealership wants you to buy the whole electrical component. So instead of selling the piece that is broken they make you replace a part that isn’t broken. Thankfully I hit the message board again and in the post they gave a link to buy the piece for a few dollars.

I wrote this piece to just to say how valuable the blogisphere was to me and how it saved me close to 400.00. Plus I really want to plug ROCKAUTO.COM for shipping the parts I needed right away and there telephone operators where extremely helpful when I decided to order another part for my truck. So if you need a part for your car or truck I highly reccomend them.

Wall-E Really Moved Me

1 07 2008

Well I got to give the movie Wall-E credit for being one of the most original and forward thinking movies Iv’e seen. In today’s uncertain times of exploding gasoline prices and damage we are causing to our environment this movie made me think about my personal impact. Right from the beginning, starting with a shot of a trash strewn city you could tell that this movie had a message to tell underneath the story. Only Pixar could churn out a movie this thought provoking and entertaining at the same time.

I think that we are really doing substantial damage at this point. From our over sized automobiles to or sprawling neighborhoods filled with oversize houses that waste precious natural resources. I really think that maybe these high gas prices are a positive thing believe it or not. Hopefully this will lead the us auto makers down another path rather than the internal combustion engine. The problem is not whats going to happen Tomorrow its what we are going to be left with a hundred years from now.

During this movie I kept thinking of Wal Mart for some reason when I saw the company portrayed in the film. But what other company can you think of when you talk about cheap goods that people don’t really need but feel they somehow need. The sad part is the movie was not that far off when they portrayed us as stupid sheep that where perfectly happy as long as we where fed and could still purchase frivolous goods. I don’t know about you but I don’t want to be that person nor do I want my children to grow up in that kind of world.

My point in this posting is just to say watch this movie and open your mind to the message the film is trying to shine through. We have a chance left to change things. But the real question is do we have the strength to change things.
